Stainless steel is one of the easiest metals to live with. It is strong, it does not rust easily, and it suits everyday wear. Gold-tone finishes, though, need a little care to keep looking their best. Here is how to look after your stainless steel jewellery in a few minutes a week.
Why stainless steel jewellery is so popular
Stainless steel is tough and resists scratches and corrosion better than many fashion metals, which makes it a great choice for pieces you wear every day. It is also affordable, so you can build a collection of dainty necklaces without spending a fortune.
How to clean stainless steel jewellery
- Use warm water and a drop of mild soap. Washing-up liquid works well.
- Wipe gently with a soft cloth. For small chains, use a soft baby toothbrush and go easy on gold-tone areas.
- Rinse with clean water.
- Dry completely with a lint-free cloth before you put it away.
Avoid bleach, harsh cleaning sprays and abrasive powders. They can dull the surface and wear down a gold-tone finish.
How to keep gold-tone pieces looking new
- Put your jewellery on last. Apply perfume, body lotion and hairspray first, then let them dry.
- Take it off for swimming, the gym and cleaning. Chlorine, sweat and household chemicals are the biggest enemies of any finish.
- Avoid rubbing. Friction from bags, tight sleeves or other jewellery slowly wears a finish away.
How to store your jewellery
Keep each piece in its own pouch or a lined jewellery box so chains do not tangle and pendants do not scratch each other. Fasten necklaces before storing them to avoid knots. A cool, dry drawer is better than a steamy bathroom shelf.
